MAKING SPACE AT THE ARMORY | HAPO NA ZAMANI (Black Arts Movement Past and Present)

The Black Arts Movement was a cultural movement in the 1960s and 1970s led by Black artists, activists, and intellectuals that shaped the ideologies of Black identity, political beliefs, and African American culture. Past and present meet to reflect, examine, and point to the full experience and culture of the Black Arts Movement in a celebratory concert hosted by Carrie Mae Weems and Carl Hancock Rux with musical direction by Vernon Reid.

Co-presented with Harlem Stage as part of their Black Arts Movement: Then and Now Conference, examining the relationship of the Black Arts Movement to race, gender, sexuality, music, photography, film, poetry, theater, and dance as well as the larger Black Power Movement.

  • Harlem Stage @ 150 Convent Avenue, New York

  • 12 – 1:30PM EST

Music & Struggle with Toshi Reagon & Nona Hendryx

Revolutionary activist and iconic art-rock, new-wave goddess Nona Hendryx (Joe’s Pub Vanguard Award recipient, GRAMMY/Emmy-nominated vocalist, record producer, songwriter, musician, author, and Ambassador of Artistry in Music for Berkelee College of Music) joins award-winning singer/songwriter/composer/activist Toshi Reagon (Alpert Award Fellow 2022), to discuss  the radical power of music in the lives and work of Black women and music's contribution to the Black Arts Movement from a feminist perspective.

Tackling social issues, love, and politics, these groundbreaking musicians discuss how music influenced their lives and helped them address urgent social issues as well as helped shape their collective modes of political Black consciousness, artistic production, and feminism. From blues, jazz, soul, funk, and R&B to hard rock, new wave, and new age music, they take a critical look at how Black women have historically negotiated intersectionality, feminism, activism, and critical thinking as well as maintained agency against male dominant power structures (including that of the Black Arts Movement), in order to contribute a socially conscious womanist perspective to its to long-lasting legacy.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Inspired, imagined, and curated by Harlem Stage Associate Artistic Director/Artist-in-Residence, Carl Hancock Rux, the Black Arts Movement Conference is a three-day event featuring a keynote address by poet, music critic, and arts administrator A.B. Spellman. The conference includes panels, discussions, essays, and performances, featuring pioneers and visionary artists including Nona Hendryx, Sonia Sanchez, Henry Threadgill, Stew, Toshi Reagon, and more, as well as a closing-night concert co-presented with Park Avenue Armory, curated by Carl Hancock Rux, Tavia Nyong’o, and Vernon Reid, with contributions by Carrie Mae Weems.

Employing roundtables, public dialogues, and screenings, the convening will explore controversial areas of tension between the intellectual, ethical, and commercial imperatives of the Black Arts Movement. In conversations between pioneers of the Black Arts Movement and a contemporary generation of artists and scholars, the Black Arts Movement Conference centers itself within a dialogue that is both historically and culturally relevant in our ever-changing world. About the Event

Between live performances in Nick Cave and Jack Cave's The Color Is, musicians Nona Hendryx and Jamila Woods sit down for a conversation moderated by author and DJ Ayana Contreras. The trio will reflect on the imprint Hendryx and Labelle's music made on a new generation of Black female vocalists and songwriters and discuss the musical home-away-from-home that Labelle found in Chicago during their touring years. Contreras brings her encyclopedic knowledge of Chicago music history to the discussion, providing context for these personal stories. Accompanied by piano and Contreras spinning vinyl records, Hendryx and Woods will riff on the songs that have shaped their lives and the undying spirit of Black creativity in Chicago.

MCA Music Talks pair powerhouse musicians with prolific artists, activists, writers, and thinkers to take on big ideas in art and culture. These intimate gatherings of performance and conversation reveal their art world anecdotes, shared ideas, and creative inspirations.

This project is organized by Tara Aisha Willis; Curator, Performance and Public Practice; with Laura Paige Kyber, Curatorial Assistant.

Nona talks with Mickalene Thomas about "For Colored Girls..." on Broadway

On May 18th, Nona Hendryx and Mickalene Thomas (Co-Producer) will be in conversation about the Broadway show FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE/WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF, nominated for SEVEN Tony Awards.

Stay tuned for links to watch the interview!

ABOUT:

Mickalene Thomas (lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) makes paintings, collages, photography, video, and installations that draw on art history and popular culture to create a contemporary vision of female sexuality, beauty, and power. Blurring the distinction between object and subject, concrete and abstract, real and imaginary, Thomas constructs complex portraits, landscapes, and interiors in order to examine how identity, gender, and sense-of-self are informed by the ways women (and “feminine” spaces) are represented in art and popular culture.

"The Gathering: A Collective Sonic Ring Shout" @ The Historic Apollo May 7th

MORE INFO PURCHASE TICKETS

First practiced by enslaved Africans in the Caribbean and in the United States, a Shout (or Ring Shout) is an ecstatic, transcendent ritual in which worshipers move in a circle while shuffling, stomping, and clapping, creating an open space to collectively grieve, awaken joy as a source of liberation, and find love as a form of resistance.

This new evening-length program, co-presented by the Apollo, brings the ancestral gathering into a contemporary context, taking audiences on a sonic journey rooted in the tradition of call and response with a diverse array of contemporary multi-disciplinary artists.

The not-to-be-missed event features the orchestral performance of Carlos Simon’s Amen!Courtney Bryan’s Sanctum, and the New York premiere of Seven Last Words, a choral work by composer Joel Thompson containing seven movements, each of which quotes the last words of an unarmed Black man before he was killed. These works will be presented in conversation with original works from Nona Hendryx and Toshi Reagon and a new commission from Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb, created to honor our ever-present need for a collective space of remembrance.

The performance is anchored by the American Composers Orchestra, comprised of 80-members and a 50-voice choir of both professional and amateur singers from African American churches and choral ensembles in New York including Abyssinian Baptist Church Choir, Broadway Inspirational Voices, Convent Avenue Baptist Church Choir, and Sing Harlem Choir with appearances by the poet and writer Mohagany L. Browne and singer Abby Dobson.

The Gathering will honor the lives we have lost and uplift the lives we continue to lead in the aftermath.

In the tradition of the ring shot, audiences are encouraged to wear white.

Co-Presented by the Apollo Theater and American Composers Orchestra

Co-Curated with National Black Theatre

Love. Grace. Power.

Get your ticket to Arden at The Flea Theater, where Nona Hendryx has joined the Board as a Co-chair.

Let’s light a light and lay it all down. Out of years of division and separation comes Arden: But, Not Without You. This genre-bending, boundary-breaking new work, commissioned by The Flea and led by Black, Gay, Queer, Korean-American, Priestexxy, Femme and Shamanic artists, is about grace, love, and the bravery it takes to find each other again after periods of darkness and indifference.

We invite you to take a walk down a path that leads to a clearing. In this clearing, you are invited into a strange, raw and thrilling ritual full of song, dance, and testimony. Come to Arden and happen upon a kind of love that feels too dangerous for the world we live in.

Bring your hopes. Bring your fears. We’ll stir them together, pass them through our sieve, and re-emerge with a newfound sense of awe and possibility for ourselves and the others with whom we move through this world.

Carrie Mae Weems, an artist who has consistently and poignantly addressed the conditions of race in the United States, will create a multi-work installation and series of performances titled The Shape of Things. Weems’ unflinching gaze at what she describes as the “pageantry” and “circus-like” quality of contemporary American political life find form in a series of large-scale installations and a cyclorama (a panoramic image on the inside of a cylindrical platform) of six to eight projections of new and existing film footage where Weems addresses the turmoil of current events and the “long march forward.” Suggestive of a 19th-century carnival with dioramas based on spontaneous street memorials, peep shows, and a Pepper’s Ghost, The Shape of Things is an incisive, powerfully emotional, and critical reflection on events both deeply embedded in American culture and history and the explosive events of the past year.

New York, NY (October 7, 2021) — The Flea Theater today announced a major strategic evolution for the performing arts organization, committing to positive and equitable artists relations while prioritizing Black, brown, and queer artistry through partnership and programming. The institution's board, leadership, and staff have resoundingly endorsed a refined mission statement, core values, operating model, a restorative engagement plan, and aesthetic direction for in-house work. Since its founding, The Flea has sought to champion voices least likely to be at the forefront and art that pushes the limits of theater. A dedicated focus on Black, brown, and queer artists in experimental theater comes at a moment in which a national spotlight is shining widespread— and longstanding—on the inherent value of BIPOC voices.

Bessie Smith: Jackie Kay in conversation with Bernardine Evaristo & Songs by Nona Hendryx

With songs performed by Nona Hendryx

This is an online event. Bookers will be sent a link in advance giving access and will be able to watch at any time for 48 hours after the start time.

The British Library and Faber Social present a celebration of Bessie Smith, pioneering blues singer and one of the biggest stars of the 1920s and 30s.

As a young black girl growing up in Glasgow, writer and poet Jackie Kay found in Bessie someone with whom she could identify and who she could idolise. Kay talks to award winning novelist Bernardine Evaristo about new her book on Bessie's life, which mixes enthralling biography with fiction, poetry and prose.

Plus a selection of Bessie Smith’s songs performed by special guest singer Nona Hendryx, most famously of the group Labelle.

Bessie’s life was as tempestuous as it was extraordinary. Born in Tennessee in 1894 and orphaned by the age of nine, Smith sang on street corners before becoming a big name in travelling shows alongside the likes of Ma Rainey. In 1923 she made her first recording for a new start-up called Columbia Records. It sold 780,000 copies..

Smith’s life was notoriously difficult: she drank pints of ‘bathtub gin’, got into violent fist fights, spent huge sums of money and had passionate love affairs with men and women. She once single-handedly fought off a chapter of the Ku Klux Klan..

Her gorgeous and powerful voice, unapologetic songs and bold personality have been an inspiration to many ever since.

Buy your copy of Bessie Smith by Jackie Kay at checkout for £11.98 (including UK postage) and watch the event at no extra cost.*

She is Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University, and divides her time between Glasgow and Manchester, where she is currently Chancellor of the University of Salford.

Bernardine Evaristo is the author of eight books and numerous other works that span the genres of verse fiction, short fiction, poetry, essays, literary criticism, and radio and theatre drama. Her solo career has never ceased innovating and has included eight studio albums, collaborations with the likes of Prince, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads and more, resulting in several top 10 hits and a Grammy nomination. Hendryx also produces, teaches and writes for theatre and film.
